Homework Distraction

I probably shouldn't keep posting photos of my now confirmed two Barred fledglings given the US Fish and Wildlife July 2013 plan to shoot Barred owls to try and recover the Spotted owl population (I am not a fan).

As it turns out I have two of these lovelies. Perhaps the other one was sleeping in this morning.

They make the same fledgling call, although at slightly different pitches. Mama wasn't too far away. I could find her easy because of all the birds yelling at her.

  1. I love the way they look at you. So why kill one species of owl to help out another? It isn't like the barred owls shouldn't be there too right?

    1. They were totally checking me out, and Nim earlier. The species problem is interesting and I am not OK with the shooting. We did a huge amount of damage to the habitat and population of the spotted owl all on our own. The barred owl have simply moved more west so they are competing for territory...barred tend to win.

  2. Those are awesome pictures! The ones we have up on BI stay mostly hidden, but we hear them. Jamie (Owl Man) has been tagging them, naming them, and watching them for years on our property. I am hoping that private property will not be included in the free shooting of these birds! That would be terrifying!

    1. You might have a different species, but he would know. This is the most bold mine have been and I woke up this AM to no more baby bunnies. Sigh. I would say private property is safe, but these owl have something like a 1000 acre range. I am not sure how they are going to do it and they are obviously getting a ton of resistance.

  3. They are so adorable!

I don't know enough to weigh in, but I generally think shooting things sucks, and the less we mess with things the better.

    Great pictures!

    1. I hear you. I am having a hard time supporting this one. Probably if we (humans) didn't exist, we might not have created the territorial issue with deforestation. It is interesting that we will interfere with a "natural" threat, but when the threat is caused by us we go into years of legal and negotiations.

  4. I don't think I could ever kill an animal, even if I was starving to death.
As beautiful as your pictures are, the second one is kind of creepy the way they are looking. Reminds me of a horror movie, my favorites of course. No, but your pictures are beautiful!

    1. :) Owls can be very creepy. Had they been young and/or I had been near the nest there would have probably been some swooping and attacking involved.
