Redmond School of Glass

On Wednesday I decided to check out my sister's evening glass blowing glass at Redmond School of Glass. In the above photo she is just at the start of her project. A small amount of glass is put on the end of a stick that is hallow so it can be blown into.

These benches are set up so that you can roll the bar back and forth while you shape the glass. A person can crouch at the end of the pole to blow into it as needed to expand the project.

During the process the project is expanded by either blowing in the pipe and by adding small amounts of molten glass.

Now the shaping is occurring using damp newspaper. During this process you are always continuing to roll the project to keep it symmetrical and keep gravity from pulling it lopsided.

Continuing to roll, and the project is expanding from blowing on the end of the pipe.

The scoring is in prep to transfer this project to another pipe.

Flattening the base of the project before transfer.

Still being flattened with a wood paddle.

The pipe being held to the base of the project also has molten glass. The project will be broken off at the score mark on the original pipe and then balanced on this new pipe.

Now that it is attached to the new pipe they will break it at the scoring line.

In the above photo the project is now on the new pipe which leaves the hole that was on the previous pipe for blowing air into now accessible to widen the project open.

Final shaping and smoothing with wet newspaper.

After a little more final smoothing the project is then taken off the pipe so it can sit until it is ready to go home.

Yardwaste Recycling, 2011

Saturday kicked off the first day of yardwaste recycling in North Bend for the season. It is free for residents and despite having a large yard for piling up my storm damage, I really do take advantage of it. If nothing else, it tends to be easier to load up my truck than drag everything into the woods.

Yardwaste day always makes me thinking of going to the dump as a kid. Except it smells better and there are not spiders on the garbage cans. My friend's son really gets a kick out of going to the dump too and she finds it so odd, but I totally get it. For some reason it is one of my enjoyable childhood memories too.

The sun came out Friday rendering me "functional" and greatly improving my relationship with Nim. I was able to take advantage of the weather to load my truck for the first run Saturday morning.

The Trillium are coming in. I always get a few in the same section of the yard. Trillium are apparently on the toxic list for dogs. Fortunately my dogs really only want to stomp on them.

Costco has been selling three pack of dog toys lately. I can't really trust Nim with fluff-filled toys anymore, but if I am watching him I let him have them.

Nim was perfectly content to run the yard all day. He also doesn't try to sneak out the gate while I am loading the truck.

Saturday morning it was time to head out to the recycling facility.

Rusty doesn't get a lot of opportunity, but he really has become quite the truck dog. My jeep was in the shop again recently and Rusty really thought he was top dog tootling around town with me out of his crate.

He has come far for a dog that was super anxious in the car when I first got him.

He is always a great companion for this errand. While being an easy dog to love, Rusty is often a hard dog to like, so I really value the things we do together that really bring out the best in his personality. Rusty likes routine and simplicity. He likes things to happen in his preferred order and at his comfort level.

At the North Bend facility, the people watching for Rusty is fantastic.

When we got back from our first load (I did three on Saturday), I let him explore the yard while I started gathering piles again. For him, the movement of the piles is like a brand new yard for exploring.

We need spring

In Nim's version of the miracle of his birth he was born with a toy in his mouth.

Expert snow dog

What a difference a little maturity makes. Now Nim actually enjoys playing in the snow.

At least it stopped actually snowing and storming today (at least for now) so we could be outside for awhile and enjoy it.

Bird in the bathroom

Yesterday a bird hit my window in the late afternoon which always makes me sad.

I went out to move her and of course she wasn't dead, which about broke me. She was so twisted around and breathing so hard I didn't want to watch her suffer.

I picked her up, put her in a box and put the box in the bathroom (my only room with a closing door), and put a space heater in there to keep her warm just in case. For at least the 100th time wished I was qualified to euthanize injured wildlife.

Around 10pm I got home and went into the bathroom - assuming I was disposing of a body. First I noticed the bird poop on the floor and finally I found her - all puffed up and sound asleep next to my mirror.

I decided to let her sleep in the bathroom and in the morning if she was still kicking around I would take her up to the wildlife rescue so they could check her over for breaks, etc.

By morning I had a situation. :) She was singing away in the bathroom and the cats were having an absolute meltdown. This will be the third bird I have put in the bathroom and it just devastates them. It would have been nice if she put a little silencer on her tweeting.

So I went in with her, realized she was flying, singing and pooping and all her friends were up for the morning and she probably didn't need to go to wildlife rehab - not to mention I have a lot to learn should I ever get educated in euthanizing. I was going to catch her but knew it would just been traumatic for both of us so while she hopped around and tweeted, I struggled with a window that never opens.

Finally she was able to hop by me and fly out to the nearest tree.

(After some looking around I believe she is a golden-crowned sparrow - the problem being that she was puffed up until morning and I didn't get a photo of her with her feathers all in order which actually looked fairly different).

Merry Christmas!

Christmas Day brought unseasonably warm weather and no rain.

Mr. "I-had-two-accidents-on-Christmas-Eve" Rusty got a long walk around town.

Rusty is playing with a new puzzle toy in the holiday theme. Since Nim destroyed his other two puzzle toys I think he was exceptionally happy to have a new one.

I got Rusty a Purina Busy Chewnola for later. It is a chew I never would have bought myself, but someone gave it to me as a puppy-welcome gift for Nim and Nim was too young for it. Rusty loves the darn things.

Taking these photos of Nim made me realize that somewhere in the past few weeks he has really started to look like an adult dog.

Nim's puzzle toy is birds in a bird house.

Such beautiful spring-like weather.

Decorating

As soon as my parents left their house this morning I packed up the dogs and headed over. Today the high schooler, the sister that traveled to Africa and myself decided to decorate their tree and the house. If they read this blog they will know before they get home. Otherwise...

The dogs did a lot of sleeping while the house was decorated. Now in fairness, I got caught up in my knitting and mostly supervised. In fact, I don't think I contributed to the decorating effort at all. The other two sisters did amazing.

Then it was time to take Christmas photos of the dogs in front of the tree (especially since this year I am not doing one myself). This was not without problems. Nim wanted that hat all day long.

Finally we got him.

Then I carried Rusty up two flights of stairs to get his photos done. This week I found out he is 59 pounds (I tried to blame his winter coat but the vet made me weigh him) which is 4 pounds overweight for his weak back-end and now he is on a diet, much to his dismay.

His sit-stay is a problem.

But as always, he eventually pulls it together. :)
